things i find when i look through my old moleskine…
from a trip to the La Jolla farmer’s market, June 14th, 2011. I call it most overused religious metaphor ever.
I found my religion in the Sunday morning farmer’s market. Baptized with a CSA membership, I take communion the the form of free samples. Each religion is advertising their beliefs: pesticide-free and organic. Banners and sunflowers show us our God, and Jesus walks among us, with Birkenstocks and an expensive baby stroller. Prophets yell at me, each with their own homemade solution of how to find heaven in their yuppie pestos and jams. Eagerly I convert in to one of the masses, participating the the weekly rituals of finding the ripest fruits.

just spent like 1 hour telling my parents npr pick up lines and then making jokes about how i’m a pastafarian and my hair is my “noodly appendages”
i’m so clearly their child.

i don’t know where these are coming from, but i’m in love

AFTER
-
so…i don’t even know how to describe my night last night. So far, all the best nights of my life have been when I’ve decided to skip out on the main big party and just spend the night with a friend instead. (JEAN, you know what i mean)
ok, yesterday I went to get my rastas, but the guy told me that it’s gonna take 8 hours, so he didn’t want to do it then, so I ended up just meeting krystyn in the plaza. We decided to spend new years together, so I went to dinner at her host-dad’s house with her family, which was incredible. Then we watched the fireworks on the roof with champagne for a while. After that we went to watch the munecos burn. The munecos are these giant, 2 or 3 story high paper mache dolls that each neighborhood builds, then stuffs with fireworks, and then sets on fire on New Years. only in Argentina, but SO much fun. After that my friend and i went back to her house and split a bottle of champagne on her roof, which we had set up with a table, bean bag chairs, and her laptop. we listened to good music and watched the fireworks for a while more. Then margaux and fanny ended up coming over and making fun of us a little bit cause we were sitting in our underwear on the roof just hanging out. We all split two more bottles of wine and just hung out and had a really wonderful night. Then margaux and fanny left, so krystyn and i cleaned up and then watched the parent trap in her bed till we fell asleep around 8. I woke up at 4:30 today. viva la argentinaaaaa

This Is Important, You Should Know About It of the Day: President Obama today quietly signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, which contains controversial provisions requiring military custody for any non-citizen suspected of terrorism and affirming the president’s authority to indefinitely detain any supporter of al-Qaeda “or associated forces, irrespective of citizenship.
In a signing statement, the President said he had “serious reservations” about the bill, and criticised lawmakers for interfering with the work of counterterrorism professionals.
“Moving forward, my administration will interpret and implement the provisions described below in a manner that best preserves the flexibility on which our safety depends and upholds the values on which this country was founded,” the statement said.
The Obama administration was successful in striking down a provision that would have removed the ability of the executive branch to override the military custody requirement. Additionally, US citizens and legal immigrants may not be subjected to military custody under the revised bill.
However, an amendment to explicitly exclude American citizens and lawful residents from indefinite detention was rejected by Congress.
“My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens,” Obama said. “Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.”
The President’s personal stance aside, in addition to creating myriad difficulties for counterterrorism agents working with suspected terrorists to gain information, the NDAA provisions leave the door wide open for future presidents to indefinitely detain American citizens without trial.
